It all seems to be about moving forward this weekend, which I guess is appropriate as I have also been moving house. Not into a permanent home, but I have moved to the town where I intend to live long term. That’s not what this Square is about today however. Today I am in the archives, taking you back over a decade to the 2012 Paralympics. Our seats were up in the gods, but we still got a great view of the events in the stadium and we were in the shade. A huge bonus when sitting outside in the late summer for a few hours!

The women’s long jump took place between August 31 to September 7, and if I recall correctly we were there Sunday 2nd. Not that there is just one competition for the women, there were in fact 6 long jump finals over the 8 day period incorporating 9 classifications. Some of the long jumping took place at the same time at other athletic events, and so we were constantly looking at different parts of the stadium to see what was going on. The only exception was when blind and visually impaired athletics jumped. Some of these extraordinary athletes required total silence in the stadium so that they could hear their assistants. Their assistant’s voice or clapping helped ensure they ran within the lines and didn’t overstep the board. Assistants usually stood to one side, but this one stood at the end of the run and leapt out of the way at the very last moment. An amazing partnership.

That’s really interesting - I never thought before about the importance of silence for visually impaired athletes. I hope your move went well?

It did thanks 🙂
and yes you suddenly realise how important it is when you see them running in a straight line towards their assistant.

I can’t imagine a big stadium like that falling completely silent. A tricky situation all round! Here’s mine today: https://grahamsisland.com/2024/05/05/not-moving-forward/

It took a bit of effort as obviously everyone on the opposite side didn’t quite understand why

I know! At moment it is okayish, but if weather doesn’t pick up in next day or so I am going to tell them off. I am paying them enough!

What a wonderful experience, Becky, to attend the Paralympics. I wish it would be televised to be able to watch the young, extraordinary athletes compete. I’m joining squares today with a variety of photos depicting the theme Groups in their new beginnings and moving on.

oh that’s such a shame they show it in the US. It is shown in the UK, not quite as well as the Olympics but enough you can keep up with it all

I often wondered in those stadiums at track and field events how you would choose what to watch. Total silence – wow, that must have been amazing just in itself.

Hard to believe that those games were 12 years ago. I think all athletes are incredible, but especially the paralympians.
And you are most definitely moving forward. Happy days in your new abode.
