It all seems to be about moving forward this weekend, which I guess is appropriate as I have also been moving house. Not into a permanent home, but I have moved to the town where I intend to live long term. That’s not what this Square is about today however. Today I am in the archives, taking you back over a decade to the 2012 Paralympics. Our seats were up in the gods, but we still got a great view of the events in the stadium and we were in the shade. A huge bonus when sitting outside in the late summer for a few hours!

The women’s long jump took place between August 31 to September 7, and if I recall correctly we were there Sunday 2nd. Not that there is just one competition for the women, there were in fact 6 long jump finals over the 8 day period incorporating 9 classifications. Some of the long jumping took place at the same time at other athletic events, and so we were constantly looking at different parts of the stadium to see what was going on. The only exception was when blind and visually impaired athletics jumped. Some of these extraordinary athletes required total silence in the stadium so that they could hear their assistants. Their assistant’s voice or clapping helped ensure they ran within the lines and didn’t overstep the board. Assistants usually stood to one side, but this one stood at the end of the run and leapt out of the way at the very last moment. An amazing partnership.

  1. What an amazing story, to even imagine that people with no sight can compete like that is beyond my imagination. The rest of us are so mediocre in comparison. I hope your move goes well, Becky.

And thanks it did – only a small move at this stage. Now settling in and getting used to the noises a new place has

      1. That is something to get used to. We had cows and wind machines in California. Now we have coyotes and sirens. 🙂

        2. Do you love living in Portugal? My husband – age 77.5 is bound and determined that he wants to live in Portugal for a while anyway. I’m kind of a chicken, but then all of you bloggers who live there are fabulous! 🙂
