The theme for January Squares is the word ‘up‘ and today I thought I’d share the Carrion Crows who were up to mischief on the neighbours flat roof. It is also a great excuse to show you those grey skies I’ve been complaining about!

It has been so grey, however we did have sunshine on Friday and Saturday, which has cheered me up enormously. In fact the blue skies and sunshine has re-energised me so much I have created our second gallery, it will open up for viewing this evening. So, if you can, do set aside a couple of hours to look round. I wonder what else though you will get up to today. Hopefully as much playful mischief as these crows!
Where I go for my morning walk there are a lot of crows. I call them the Crow Gang, because on bin emptying day they gather together and, if there’s a bin with the lid not secured, they proceed to get into the rubbish and scatter it everywhere. Naughty birds!
This afternoon we went to see a fantastic new Australian movie “The Dry”, based on the novel by Jane Harper. I don’t know if the movie will be shown elsewhere but I highly recommend the book. It’s an excellent read, as are her next three novels.

They’re such clever birds
ooh thanks for the tip. Goodness knows when we will visit a cinema again, but I will look up her books 😀

If you like a good murder mystery, her books will be just perfect. Combine that with her evocative descriptions of rural Australia and they are fantastic.

Just looked up her website, the book covers have me sold already 🙂

So you need to read books 1 and 2 in order but 3 and 4 are stand alone stories.

oh dear – we have on average 15 to 20 different species visiting. Loving your soup, how was the casserole last night?

The casserole was great thanks, the rest to make this morning, when I get going

No rush it is a Sunday a day to go slow! Hope you have the sunshine

Glorious sunshine, I shall get myself into the garden when I have recovered some energy after job no 1 (making the second half of the casserole, it’s in the slow cooker now). Then I need to make sure I have energy left for jointing a chicken for the freezer….and it’s so many years since I did that, I’m not sure I’ll make a good fist of it. Then one of the joints will be cooked for today’s lunch

excellent glad you have sunshine too – don’t try and do too much though. Maybe you can delegate the jointing to P?

Nope, because P is out of my sphere as meeting others, and I am being Covid safe where I can

It’s all so tough at moment, but hopefully it won’t be long now before you can start meeting up with them again. Sending digital hugs for now, and my in-person one will follow soon xxx

I can imagine them squaking there on the roof. We don´t get them here, only the grey crows live here.
Good to get some sunshine! Looking forward to the gallery 🙂

It is rare for them to land so close to us, but they’re hungry and had spied we were putting food out for the other birds!

Carrion Crows!!! around your place!!!! What’s in the nieghbours yard? Have you seen their partner recently? Have you a secret in your backyard?
Grey skies aren’t all that bad….blue skies and 35C plus are a bit daunting to go outside

Hee hee, more like what can they spy from their ridiculously large flat roof!
Yeah can imagine 35C plus is a bit much, but 14days of solid grey with no sun wasn’t much fun. Had lights on in house most days. Still that now seems to be behind us and listening to a lovely dawn chorus at present 🙂

awww now that’s a lovely sound too. Ours were out last night, first time for ages – hoping they know spring is on the way here!

They are stopping by species almost…..one by one…..the Cicadas will start soon for a hopeful last minute rendezvous…often nit’s the larger ones who stop last. Tonight it may be the Currawongs

Currawongs?! Off to do some research . . . .

They make the most amazing sounds. Sorry I must add PIED Currawongs. There is about 4 or 5 different Currawongs.

And reading I see they’re passerines not crows . . guess a bit like shrikes

There were Currawongs where I worked in North Sydney. In the afternoons when working late in Summer, the Currawongs used to sit in the street trees and wolf whistle at people. They did it to me once, I looked around and there wasn’t a soul in the street. I bet they had a good laugh 🙂
