In early September as well as finding lovely nature spots and green spaces in NYC, I also travelled back in time to the 1970s. It was such fun, and even the dodgy area had me smiling! There were though warnings everywhere as I travelled back in time, so guess I better do the same here. If you are a sensitive soul and/or under the age of 18 years then don’t scroll past the first gallery. You have been warned!

This large scale sculpture – Dame of the Narrows – is the extraordinary creation of artists Red Grooms and Mimi Gross with their collaborators in The Ruckus Construction Co. Their aim was to capture the chaos, corruption, sexuality, and creativity of 1970s NYC. I only wish I could have got closer to see inside the ferry, which you could have done when it was first installed in 1975 at 88 Pine Street.

You could though get very close in their 42nd Street Porno Bookstore; which I have to admit just made me giggle once I stepped inside. It is a rollicking immersive experience; the figures are full sized. You can also get up close and personal if you click on the gallery.

Alternatively you might prefer what usually comes to mind when someone mentions 42nd Street before you visit other Six Word Saturdays

    1. I bumped into an American author/teacher as I was walking round and the two of us were saying exactly the same – I should have photographed the warning signs there were so many!

        1. a little bit but only because it was hidden around a corner, and you had to walk past so many warning signs. You were almost made to feel as though you were doing something wrong.
