A few years ago the Olhanese authorities decided to remove some of the ponds that feed into the saltpans in preparation for development that would further spruce up the waterfront. At the time we were horrified as it stripped away some of the natural barriers between the town and the feeding and roosting areas for hundreds of wading birds. These changes along with an increase in tourists have had a significant impact on birdlife. Since Robert died I haven’t been back to Olhão da Restauração so I don’t know how things are these days, but hopefully the birds have begun to recover.
The one upside of the changes is that walking round them all those years ago led Robert to demonstrate his skill at funny walks! Told you there would be more fun shadows.

If you are wondering what on earth is going on, we are in the middle of a Squares Challenge. The theme is shadows, and the only rule is that your image must be square. Some of us are squaring daily until 30th November, but you don’t have to square daily to be a member of the Squares Challenge nor do you have to include music. Extra fun though if you do!
What a great photo and another very happy memory!

Shadow fun with legs! What a great image you gave us except for the loss of habitat.
Mine is square so it qualifies but is it a shadow or a reflection??

yeah this is definitely one of those glass half full, half empty moments – I am intrigued by yours. Be there in a moment

There’s nothing like remembering those we love with a smile. This is a lovely post, Becky B. There is so much sorrow and regret in the world, that we have to look hard for the fun lurking in the shadows. Mine shadows arrive tomorrow.

How lovely to see Robert in the shadows month. And such a fun memory. But sad about the development. Hopefully the birds have found another place.

He was so full of glee when he started doing this. I have a list of all the quirky things he did as well as his likes & dislikes, those things that made me smile or were just the way he did things – started writing it a week or so after he died. And this funny walk was one of the things. I cherish the list now – as think I’d forgotten some of the more mundane items otherwise

A shame about the development impacting the birds, but a fun and clever shot!

Sad about the birds. We humans have a lot to answer for. I think a lot of us worked on our silly walks back in the day! Here’s mine today: https://grahamsisland.com/2025/11/10/hot-cat-no-tin-roof/

I know, so sad so much of the buffer zone for nature is disappearing
