I’ve been loving all your Squares guesses from water to observation to curves to skyline to transportation. Some of those might make it into a future Squares but not next month. The theme for November is hopefully now really obvious from my header pic and the title.
Having said that about the title, I better confirm that I’m not thinking of the optical illusion by Edward H Adelson. Although if you can photograph the Square in Shadow, more commonly known as the chequer-shadow, it would earn you bonus points!
Next month as the nights draw in, in the northern hemisphere, and the shadows grow shorter in the southern, I thought we could all shadow each other. Or at least photograph shadows.

I have high hopes for multiple and varied squares next month as wherever there is light there are shadows, partial light, dark areas, and silhouettes. Shadows can also be reflections, an illusory image, a remnant of a thing, an imitation, or an inseparable companion. So have fun looking through your archives and going out with your camera between now and Squares.
We will begin on 1st November, and as long as your image is square you can post daily, weekly, or whatever frequency suits you and your blog. It is also totally up to you whether you pingback via your post or add your link with a comment on one of my daily square posts. Both approaches work if your image is square!
Only the shadow knows, squared! ; )

Hm..will have to look and see. I try not to get shadows in the photos!!

hee hee, yeah I know we all tend to do that but once I started looking at my photos I realised there’s always a shady spot in one corner. So hopefully you can show off your usual lovely landscapes

You’re the second to mention shadow-boxing, brilliant phrasing. I can’t believe how I didn’t think of it myself!!

This should be fun, though like Jude I’m confused that you include reflections which to me are very different from shadows. Maybe save them for a future Squares month???

Ah sorry for confusion. As I’ve just explained to Jude it’s not me it’s the dictionaries that say that about reflected images! I am fine if people choose to include them as well as shadows. I’ve always been pretty relaxed over theme interpretation. Learnt squares works best when there is creative flexibility. 🙂 My one rule is the squareness

Fair enough – flexibility is usually a good approach when it comes to challenges 🙂

You say “Shadows can also be reflections,” but I would disagree with that. Shadows block light whereas reflections bounce light onto a reflective surface. So they are not the same. Just to be clear, you are looking for shadows? Silhouettes?

It’s not me it’s the dictionaries that say that about reflected images! However yes looking for shadows, and that includes dark areas and silhouettes. I’ve got some watery shadows planned and at least one of them is a reflected image. Be interesting to see what you think of it when I post 🙂

One other question, do we just focus on the shadow or shade or can the actual object that creates the shadow be included.

Can definitely include actual object that creates shade

fantastic – now thinking about it have a vague recollection you did a One Word Sunday of Shadows a few years ago

two or three times I think. It’s great because anyone can do it, whenever, wherever. And squaring it will add an extra challenge. Will this long shadows fit in?

I’ve had to reject a few long ones already!

Once you start looking at your travel pics I have every confidence you’ll see shade or shadows in many of them.

I was planning to feature the five stops on our Baltic Sea cruise last July but not every day was sunny. 😬 As usual I might be pushing the boundaries a bit. 😄
