Red chard is a member of the beetroot family, which is why you may also know it as leaf beet or beet spinach.

Gave me a perfect excuse to use my beetroot idiom!

The theme for July squares is ‘‘Simply Red‘ and the one rule is that your main photograph must be square. If colour is not your thing, then don’t worry why not play around with some red idioms such as;

  • A red rag to a bull – means provocation but for squares perhaps you could photograph a warning sign, or a moment of danger
  • As red as a beetroot – means embarrassed but for the content of your squares I am also thinking hot or excited
  • Paint the town red– means having a very good time but for squares I am thinking flamboyance!
  • Red herring – something that is deliberately misleading, so for squares I was thinking perhaps an illusion
  • Red letter day– is a memorable day or experience, so I know everyone will have at least one photograph that captures this. Today’s announcement square was definitely a red letter experience.
  • Roll out the red carpet – or why not give your blog the red carpet treatment in July by sharing your favourite images and perhaps a little bit of glamour

Squares is a daily challenge but don’t worry if you haven’t posted yet this month. Even on square is sufficient to be part of the Squares Gang. Just don’t forget to keep your photo square, and to pingback with #SimplyRed!

  3. I used to love both red chard and other veggies that we simply can’t seem to find out here. Beautiful! It looks kind of like rhubarb. Can you make pies from it or is it just part of dinner? Very pretty, regardless.

    AND I got my post up. I know it has been a while, but it has been busy.

      1. Only because rhubarb stopped being a vegetable and became something you mix with strawberries and sugar and bake in a crust. I’m not sure it is ever used as a vegetable. Of course, if they actually sold it in grocery stores, we might give it a try in other things. Usually, when you buy it, it is already part of a pie. Strawberry-rhubarb pie. Used to be very popular.

        1. but we make potato pie, pumpkin pie, beetroot tart, onion tart and they are all vegetables so I think we probably can 😀

        2. And let’s not forget pumpkin and sweet potato pies. Sweet potato and pumpkin are often used interchangeably, maybe because you can get the potatoes all year and pumpkins are only available in the fall. I have given up baking pies. I’m hopeless with pie crust. It looks great but is hard as a rock. Inedible, but lovely in photographs. I don’t even know what I do wrong.

        4. I bake GREAT bread or used to when I ate more bread. I bake cakes. It’s just pastry. I have tried. The last try, it was beautiful. Perfect. Garry tried to get into that pot pie. He hit it with his fork. It didn’t even chip. He tried his knife. Nope. Eventually, we just removed the crust since it could have easily substituted for bullet-proof armor.

          That was my “giving up” point. I had produced perfect yet inedible crust. It looked GREAT and if it was intended purely as a photo prop, it would have been ideal. As food, it was a fabulous failure.
