It is 2025 and we are already squaring, how fabulous is that. And in the traditional way at this time of year I am looking back over past years and reflecting. Well by reflection I mean sharing a square from my archives.

Geometric January in Black & White

It is day one of GeometricJanuary, and I am so excited to be here. I have gone for a sundial, the epitome of geometry, and in this square it is even hiding behind shapes, lines and spaces. I wonder what you will all go for today?

Geometry is not only one of the oldest branches of mathematics, but it pops up everywhere. It is used by animators, architects, artists, astronomers, carpenters, cartographers, designers, engineers, landscape gardeners, navigators, scientists, urban planners and as of today the Squares Gang. And anyone can be a member of the gang as long as you remember your main image must be Square in shape!

The other rules are simply recommendations;

  • the challenge begins today and remains active until the last day of this month
  • it is a daily challenge but you can also post weekly, just once in the month or whatever frequency suits you and your blog
  • it is totally up to you whether you pingback via your post or add your link with a comment on one of my daily square posts. Both approaches work.
  • it helps me enormously when creating the galleries if you use the tag. This month it is GeometricJanuary

By the way if my first square of the month feels familiar, there have been other versions. The first one appeared in Perspectives in July 2020, and then a rectangular version was shown the following month. If you look carefully you’ll spot the Misumena vatia. However it’s the trigonometry of sundials that has led me to share this square today.

Now I may not be around much today to catch up as not only do I have American guests but I have discovered Bradford has a rather fabulous New Year’s Day tradition of bacon baps by the canal, and if the weather isn’t too bad today I don’t intend to miss them!

    1. sadly I didn’t get to have one as weather too dreadful this morning; it’s one of the reasons I am not 100% veggie!

      Look forward to your Friday geometrics

  2. Bacon baps sounds like a good idea, but like Jo I don’t have any bacon! Not a great start to the year as we’ve come home with lurgy.

    1. was such a good idea, but it didn’t happen. Weather too dreadful this morning, but yikes you have the lurgy. That’s really not good.

  4. It’s a really beautiful photo in black and white, Becky. Distinctly envious of those baps- I forgot to get any bacon in, and somehow duck pate sandwiches for breakfast doesn’t appeal! We’ll be walking out to Santa Luzia, across the salt pans, later. Wishing you a wonderful year ahead.
