I think for many of us a rainbow is a sign of hope, of friendship and of inclusivity. Perhaps though you’re also thinking of the refraction, reflection and dispersion of light in the water droplets, and how that results in a continuous spectrum of light. Or maybe you immediately think of the mnemonic Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain, or are you wondering if there is a crock of gold at the end?

For me, well they remind me of Robert as he loved them.

Whatever a rainbow means to you I do hope that whenever you see one you can stop for a moment to admire its beauty, and feel a sense of joy and renewal. Talking of renew, I also hope you are planning on joining me and the Squares Gang tomorrow!

  1. From where our house is situated we often see rainbows in the afternoon, if there is some moisture in the air and the afternoon sun is just at the right angle. Seeing one always stops me in my tracks because they are usually very vivid. And often they are doubles, which is even more beautiful.

  2. For me, rainbows bring out the child like feelings of joy, they always make me smile. As many have mentioned it is a lovely way to remember someone and to think that they’re spreading colourful joy.

  3. My mother loved rainbows and fireworks. Such a crazy combination, but both of them (always) make me tear up thinking of how much she loved them and would treasure seeing what I’m looking at.

    1. I can appreciate the emotional impact of feeling all her love for you and your love for her every time either appear. I love though that she adored colourful surprises so much

  4. My mother in law loved to see a rainbow because they reminded her of her father, she saw them as a sign he was watching over her. Since she died I’ve started to associate them with her for that reason.

    1. oh that is so lovely. Everytime I see one now I am not just going to think of Robert, I am going to think of you and other bloggers who are thinking of their loved ones too

      1. Sending huge hugs. The hole they leave is so vast some days, and never goes even when we grow around it.

I think the small things are worse in some ways. Those moments when you go to share, and can’t. I talk to MrB loads, and also keep a journal where every now and again I write down what we would have discussed that day.

  5. I love rainbows too. We saw a great one the other day on our way back from a walk. Very broad and only really visible against the hills at first, it morphed into a proper arch as we drove towards it (though we never quite caught up enough to find the crock of gold). And sorry to lower the tone, but I also think of Cilla Black warbling Sing a Rainbow.

  6. That’s a lovely reminder of Robert, Becky. Am I being too whimsical to say you can feel his presence in the rainbow? Friends had an apartment in that block not very long since and I stood there looking out and thinking of you. I’ll pop in for a look tomorrow but I won’t have squares for you just yet. Sending hugs!
