A week or so ago I shared with you a very cute goat and its friend, well today I thought I’d share with you a few more goats alongside some evidence that it is not just me that hugs wild 4 legged creatures!

The current goats at Mount Fløyen are 5 years old and they are here to help manage the vegetation. Although a couple of them seemed more focused on getting hugs from tourists than eating! They are cashmere goats and their names are Alex, Ferdinand, Fløydis, Frøya, Gucci, Pippi, Stjerna, Spot, Trym and Waldemar. Sadly I don’t know which of the ten I photographed except I am pretty sure none of them were Ferdinand or Pippi.

I took the easy way up the mountain I caught Norway’s fourth most visited attraction – the Fløibanen. It is an 850-meter (2,790 ft)-long funicular that travels from the centre of Bergen to Fløyfjellet near the summit of Fløyen.

Some street art caught my eye on the way up.

Mount Floyen, also known as Fløyfjellet, is one of “seven” mountains that surround Bergen; the other six are Sandviksfjellet, Rundemanen, Ulriken, Løvstakken, Damsgårdsfjellet and Lyderhorn. If you are free next May you could join thousands of others and claim an honorary citizenship of Bergen by hiking all seven in one day! The 7 mountain hike is not for the faint hearted though as it takes around 10-12 hours, is 35 km long, and has an elevation of 2500 metres.

Alternatively visit another time and enjoy as I did one of the numerous well marked trails and hiking routes. If I had researched in advance I think I might have attempted the 3 mountain version as that takes 4 to 6 hours, and I would have had just enough time in my port day to have done that. Perhaps next time. It is a beautiful area, and so unsurprisingly it wasn’t just tourists I saw. There were numerous locals going for a run, hike or chilling out with their family. I even saw a marriage proposal on the edge of lake Skomakerdiket; she said yes!

I love cities that have nature right on their doorstep, and so despite the fact I was one of hundreds of tourists in port that day, I really liked Bergen. I’ll share more pics with you in a couple of weeks, but for now here’s a signpost that caught my eye because it had my final port on it

  1. We do love a good funicular and we often ride up and walk back down. I don’t think I’ll be achieving honorary citizenship any time soon. Seven mountains in one sounds a bit extreme and I’m definitely not a glutton for punishment. The scenery in your photos is gorgeous. Norway has long been on my list.

  2. I loved Bergen back in 1973. It’s a lovely city. I was lucky to have met an American who had a flat there so I was able to visit her a few times. And yes, I did enjoy the funicular.

  3. Looks like a great place to hike, especially with the weather you had that day. The seven mountain hike would be too much for me these days, but the three mountain one sounds like a good day out.
