It was an incredibly grey and cold day I spent in Brooklyn in May, but after a day of sitting in airports and planes I was anxious to get out and walk. So I decided to head towards the closest greenery on the map as it would be days before I saw trees again. I soon found myself in a small lovely park.

Google maps of course didn’t the multiple steps, however after a year of living in Bradford-on-Avon steps and hills don’t worry me! Once up some of the steps I had to look back down.

Two days before NYC had been in a heat wave!

Right at the top of the steps there was an expected find – a monument. I didn’t photograph it from the front as there was a man in the middle of his yoga salutations and I didn’t think it fair to him. So I headed round to the side. I am glad I did as if I hadn’t I probably would have missed the plaque that explained the history of the monument. I am still thinking about the 11300 sailors and soldiers buried in the crypt underneath.

Today I am on my way back to Brooklyn, although it is going to be a five days before I actually arrive as I am crossing the Atlantic on a ship. Still can’t quite believe I am doing this again!

  1. Interesting bit of history there Becky. You have to watch out for those British people. They’re not always as nice as they like to make out!

  2. Another exciting chapter! I knew nothing about this shameful footnote in British history. Though it’s unsurprising we don’t include it in GCSE history courses. Enjoy your next days of dicovery.
