Ooh look at that my title is Six, which means I can double dip today and join in with Six Word Saturday and July Squares! Follow the link to find out about 6WS and keep reading for Squares.
The theme for July squares is ‘‘Simply Red‘ and the one rule is that your main photograph must be square. If colour is not your thing, then don’t worry why not play around with some red idioms such as;
- A red rag to a bull – means provocation but for squares perhaps you could photograph a warning sign, or a moment of danger
- As red as a beetroot – means embarrassed but for the content of your squares I am also thinking hot or excited
- Paint the town red– means having a very good time but for squares I am thinking flamboyance!
- Red herring – something that is deliberately misleading, so for squares I was thinking perhaps an illusion
- Red letter day– is a memorable day or experience, so I know everyone will have at least one photograph that captures this. Today’s announcement square was definitely a red letter experience.
- Roll out the red carpet – or why not give your blog the red carpet treatment in July by sharing your favourite images and perhaps a little bit of glamour
Squares is a daily challenge, so your photographs can be from the archives or brand new. If daily is too difficult, then feel free to post every other day, weekly or even just once this month. Don’t forget though to keep your photo square, and to pingback with #SimplyRed!
Glorious red! A perfect contrast to the water

I decided to change it so I wasn’t copying too much, but you’ll see the likeness in the coming days, if you remember amongst all the followers and participants you have. No matter.

Glorious Virginia Creeper! I’m double dipping again today, and will be tomorrow too. Bit cheeky today. You’ll have to scroll right down to the bottom to find it: https://margaret21.com/2025/07/05/six-degrees-of-separation-from-theory-and-practice-to-at-the-bottom-of-the-river/

I hope I didn’t intrude on anybody’s space with my comments on your beautiful red creeper. I have a flora post of sorts as well: https://picturesimperfectblog.com/2025/07/05/confront-me-im-yours/

you certainly haven’t; I am just loving the creeper versus ivy debate. As you will have seen from another comment I have made I have no idea what it is. Long may the discussion continue 🙂

Lovely ivy colour Becky. Wonderful double dip and a good song 😀

I think it’s a Virginia creeper / Wilder Wein, not ivy. [smart alec mode out] 😁

I have three search results in my favourites at the moment so I can find any red song I require. Part of me getting prepared at the last minute 😁

Nice find! Is it a type of ivy?

I’m pretty sure it’s a virginia creeper in English. In German I’m very sure that it is called “wilder Wein” and is related to the proper vine that gives us wine.

That’s interesting. Virginia creeper grows here in Australia too. Not sure that I would recognise it though. 😊

It’s very widespread here, and it really stands out in autumn.

I think it’s Boston Ivy. Much smaller leaves than Virginia Creeper.

I only know the German name: Wilder Wein and the translations are all over the place, thanks.

there’s a bit of a discussion going on as to exactly what it is! Some are saying it is an ivy and others think might be a Virginia Creeper – I have no idea!!
