The Pérez Art Museum acquired this abstract composition in 2021, forty years after Lydia Okumura, a Brazilian artist, created it. I was fortunate enough to see it when I was in Miami last year.

Using acrylic paint, painted aluminium sheets, cotton string, charcoal and pencil, it projects from the wall creating a three-dimensional space.
Previously it had been shown at “Women Geometers“, a group exhibition curated by Piero Atchugarry Gallery to celebrate the work of twelve Latin American artists known for their Geometric Abstractions.
As you have probably gathered I like it!
I also think it is perfect for January Squares.

If you haven’t yet squared this month, why not join us today or at the weekend. The theme is Geometry and as long as your image is square almost anything works. If you cannot join us today then no worries, as;
- this daily challenge remains active until the end of January but you can post as frequently or infrequently as you like in the month
- it is also totally up to you whether you pingback via your post or add your link with a comment on one of my daily square posts. Both approaches work.
- it does though help me enormously if you use the tag GeometricJanuary
- And apologies if I’m slow with comments and pingback approvals today, I’m out and about until this evening
what a fascinating art piece! Shapes and colors create something greater than the pieces. It inspired me to share this. https://lightwords.blog/2025/01/14/geometric-aviary/

I am always in awe of artists who create these, as you say something greater than the pieces

I have noticed I seem to have done quite well with female artists and creators this month. Subconscious act I think

Definitely fits the geometry theme, but a bit plain for me. I prefer my more lively Brazilian artist who I featured a few days ago.

I usually do too, but there was something about the simplicity of this one

Excellent choice Becky. I’m still trying to get my head around how it works! Nothing from me today, but back tomorrow.

I know, so clever a few lines here, the odd piece of string there, paint a wall and find a bit of metal – and then . . . . .
