It had been a long morning first in the fog and then enjoying the delights of the Japanese gardens1. So even though there was a possibility now of uninterrupted views of Mount Hood, my head was completely and utterly focused on refreshments. Well almost completely focused on food as I rejected the quickest option of the shuttle bus and stuck to my own two feet. I was enjoying stretching my legs in this fabulous park and at least the route back was the shortest walking route.

Shortest didn’t mean easy though. There were so many twists and turns, and also ups and downs. I was getting a good workout! It was also so beautiful now. Distracted by the canopy above, I almost forgot my need for sustenance.

Eventually I emerged from the forest not far from where I had entered it in the morning. Then I have been surrounded by fog, and had felt a little bit disheartened. Now the fall colour was popping and the sky was a stunning blue. It had turned into an absolutely glorious day.

Then my tummy rumbled which led to me noticing how tired I was feeling. I had been walking for nearly 9 miles, and whilst that isn’t far for me on a walking day I hadn’t had breakfast. With my mind refocused on food I headed for the Max station and back to downtown Portland. I popped into a deli and headed for the river. I wanted to stay in this glorious sunshine whilst I ate my lunch. Mount Hood joined me; it wasn’t an uninterrupted view but she was looking more visible than she had done earlier.

  1. I’m glad the sun came out for you, even if you were hungry. Portland’s a beautiful city (though suffering some these days I hear) and the volcanoes of the Cascades are a sight to behold.

    1. I loved the city but you are so right about parts of it suffering. Was struck by the numbers of homeless.

I hope to return and explore the Cascades

  2. You’re right, those trees do look even more beautiful with sunshine and the blue sky as a backdrop! No wonder you were distracted on your search for food – I’m so glad you lingered long enough to capture the colours and share them with us 🙂

  4. I absolutely love it when you start out in fog and end in radiant sunshine. It’s happened to me a few times and disappointment just melts away. These colours are glorious, Becky! Thanks so much for letting me walk with you.
