Given how busy next month is for so many of us, I thought I’d announce the theme for January Squares early. Some of you might have guessed it last week in ‘Signs of Confusion‘ or work it out before you scroll past the image below.

Have you guessed the theme? Your first thought might have been shapes. Well shapes are part of the theme, but are not the only part. In addition to shapes and lines your photographic squares could also explore the size, distance and position of objects. Have you guessed the theme now? No worries if not as I will confirm it in the next paragraph.

Squares in January is a chance to celebrate one of the oldest branches of mathematics – geometry. I have high hopes for multiple and varied squares in the new year as geometry is used by animators, architects, artists, astronomers, carpenters, cartographers, designers, engineers, landscape gardeners, navigators, scientists, urban planners, and . . . . . well everyone really.

We will begin on 1st January, and as long as your image is square you can post daily, weekly, or whatever frequency suits you and your blog. The tag is GeometricJanuary and I’ll confirm the url pattern with more geometric ideas in December.

  1. This will be a fun theme, Becky. Many photographers are naturally drawn to lines and shapes. I’m on a two-week posting cycle for Sunday Stills until February, due to holidays and travel by car to Arizona before Christmas. But I’m planning to post weekly for Wordless Wednesday. Geometry is a great inspiration when I shoot pics in Arizona.

Many thanks for the early warning ⚠️

Have you heard any more about our Cee?

    1. Thanks Terri, and yay for Arizona trip can’t wait to see the geometrics.

Not heard anything since she came home last weekend – they have quite a few health professionals involved. She was though delighted to get home. Hopefully will have another update soon xx

  3. Giving myself a small pat on the back because I remember saying in the barn in BofA, “something about angles?” So almost there. Having said that, I might sit this one out, or maybe just pop in occasionally, if I can’t make it fit my travel/Glasgow themes. I have so much still to write up.

  4. Well, Becky, this is an interesting one. And considering how very much I detested Maths at school, it’s surprising how excited I find myself feeling about this one. Just about to open a folder with already some ideas about some pictures to pop in. I think you might have a busy January on your hands!

    1. Yay!! I am so pleased and if only in mathematics they had shown us how much geometry is part of our lives, you might have enjoyed maths more! Can’t wait to see what you come up with

      1. I didn’t actually mind geometry so much. It was algebra that remined impenetrable. Squares will be a bit tricky in January, as we’ll be travelling for at least a fortnight of it,and in Spain for the rest. Yes, that’s right. We’re dodging British Winter for an entire month! But I’ll try …
