Squares had been finished nearly a week when I spotted this in California, but how could I ignore it! Union 76, or 76 as it is now known, first appeared in California in 1932.

By the 1960s it had spread to the midwest and south east, and it was then the orange ball began to appear too. A couple of decades ago the orange balls began to replaced by boring rectangular signs with the circular image on them. Fortunately though there was a campaign to save the balls, and it was successful. Consequently nearly 100 years after the 76 brand was created and more than 60 years since the orange balls appeared, many gas stations still have them!

And it has provided me with the both the energy and inspiration to create a Squares gallery. So I do hope you are all sitting comfortably and have a cup of something by your side as we have more than fifty squares to visit.
Let’s start with some returners as well as a new squarer.
- I am not the only one who found extra special round things posing last month, so no wonder a few of us were opening the bottles and getting ready early for halloween
- We have had so much fun discovering sevens, especially when walking in our city squares and yards
- And who can resist an evocative letter or perfectly placed stones when there is so much beauty at dawn.
Wasn’t that a wonderful start to our second #SevenforSeptember gallery. I do hope you were able to visit at least a couple of the squarers in the first room. In our next room we have many blogging friends, including two fabulous English British bloggers who will be arriving at my house tomorrow and also Cee who I know everyone has in their thoughts. Chris has shared how much Cee has appreciated all the messages you have sent via my Sunday post. So I thought we’d start in the next room with Cee and my two visitors.
- It is always a bonus day when crossing a bridge or seven to meet up with much loved blogging friends
- We can enjoy sunsets together as well as catch up on beloved memories and colourful adventures
- It is always better to catch up in 3D and to walk and share yarns with friends as otherwise you find yourself going round in circles
Wasn’t that a lovely room. Our next room is also great, and it is a large one full of Squarers who have been having fun counting to seven.
- There are many variations on counting to seven; and it gets very wild at times getting to that number 7, especially with felines
- Pizza was essential to keep us going last month along with a
comfybed and great music at sunset - There was sadness at times so I am relieved you kept safety in mind (red lights) and came to our rescue
- I smiled when we counted in latin, loved joining you on your outings and was delighted when you found better winds and one of Robert’s favourite trees
Thank you all for joining me last month, your posts and kind words really helped keep me going as I toured the USA on my own. I look forward to sharing some of my US tales with you soon, but first our penultimate room in the #SevenforSeptember‘s gallery.
- Afterall you have shared so much beauty and incredible photographic memories and stunning macros we must explore the gallery rooms
- You are all marvellous as not only have you spoilt me with flowers and crossed the seven seas for squares, you have been birding, something Robert loved
- You have also replenished me with your delicious sharings as we have looked back over the years and enjoyed past adventures
I still can’t quite believe how many of you are still squaring with me; I do hope to see many of you again for the next squares. All being well it will be in January, but I will confirm in late November. For now though please take a few moments to visit one or seven squarers in the final room.
- This room is full of unexpected moments and family history as well as other seven brands and signs
- The art in September has been incredible as has been your enthusiasm for the randomness and oddness of seven
- Some of you even caught the waves as we finally said farewell to Seven in September and contemplated other square tales
Such a fabulous gallery!! Thank you for all your hard work while traveling. You are so inspirational and I thank you for hosting this incredibly fun challenge! I’m a little late to the party, but it’s never too late with the written word. Luckily I can keep reading when I can fit it into my busy schedule! 🤗💞

Someday, I will make one of these recaps. I guess I didn’t get it right, but I enjoyed seeing everyone else’s material. Maybe I’ll catch a break next square time.

Marilyn you are always in the recaps if you have squared in the relevant time period. So you were in the first gallery I did in September and also in this one – take another look at the final room. I linked to your square on the 29th

Fabulous Becky. I do wish there was a way to sort out the posts I have already seen. I just go to each section, click open in new tab for each and then read. I even open my own lol
I am sure you’ll have some late nights and lots of chatting.
I hope BoA has some good places to have a meal and an ale. Say a hi from me please. Who has the bed made from the boxes of books 😁
Enjoy, relax and have a great time xx

Good idea. I am too quick to do the select and click and I go down the page 🙄
I like seeing posts from people I don’t know. I only reply to a handful when the photo appeals.
Have fun x

Well done Becky. How you have managed to host this challenge whilst travelling I shall never know. I do hope that now you are home you will find time to write about your travels. I know you post on Instagram, but I don’t so can’t see your posts there. I love the story behind the 76.
I have popped in to visit one in each of your rooms, and thank you for linking to me. Have fun with those visiting bloggers. I do hope BoA is well prepared!

We had so many ’76’ balls on our station wagons antenna it broke on our way back to Minnesota from Washington State in 1970 ❗️

As far as I can remember back in the 60’s Union 76 antenna styrafoam balls only came in one size

Hosting a challenge is a lot of work, Becky. Your galleries are legendary! I love the 76 ball. I grew up seeing them everywhere. I remember when gas stations were “service” stations in the 60s, where, when you stopped for gas, the attendant pumped gas then cleaned your windows. Long gone are those days. Although you may have discovered that attendants at fuel stops in Oregon pump the gas.
it’s so fun to meet up with bloggers in person. I’m planning to see several in Arizona when we do our new annual snowbird journey in late December and January.
Thanks again for hosting squares, Becky!
