When preparing for any Squares Challenge I always type the theme words or their synonyms into the search function of my online photo albums to see if anything comes up. And for this month I was almost inundated with ideas when I typed in reconstruction because of my habit of photographing information boards at historical sites!

I know I know this photograph isn’t square, but I had to include it because of what is written and there are squares in this post!

You don’t actually need to read the information board though to spot that this magnificent castle and its impressive forty metre high keep has undergone significant reconstruction over the years.

The archway in my header and gallery below is Roman and the keep itself dates from the 14th century. They just kept adding to the castle as the approach to defense and attack changed over the centuries. There have also been modern repairs.

Robert and I enjoyed looking around this castle in Beja, but as you may know from my original Portuguese post I didn’t make it to the top of the keep – Torre de Menagem.

The keep in Beja

By the way I will be offline most of tomorrow as I am moving into my next temporary home. Then next week is also very busy with other stuff. So there will be some days when I might be slow with my square visiting, but I will visit. So please keep squaring!

  1. We were last there for Beja Romana, which happens sometime in May, and were accompanied by a legion of Roman soldiers! The town got very festive and we enjoyed the narrow alleys full of stalls and atmosphere. It rained at one point and we ducked in a tiny cafe. Did you make it to the museum, Becky? A huge glass floor covers the ruins of the Roman city.

Glad you’re squaring Portugal. You’ll have some amazing memories. I will have a post for you but I’m not sure which to link it to. I thought possibly the first? I’m travelling next week, so won’t be around much. Good luck with the move! Hope all goes smoothly.

    1. Beja is a fascinating little town, we really liked it. Just so glad we got there.

Also can’t still quite believe we won’t get to explore more of Alentejo together.

    1. Good memories indeed 🙂

Have fun with your visitors, and linking to this one is good – although don’t forget my urls and the timing of posts are following a theme if you want to schedule ahead that way.

        1. oh how strange, maybe it is the timing. Mine are being posted at set times this month which might help. 5:__ and then exact minute reflects day.

  3. I just posted May 2nd and you are already into the 3rd! Love this old castle. They have some unique ones in Portugal with the Moorish influence.

    1. Time zones are always so weird aren’t they in challenges. And you are so right about the architectural influence of the Moors; a very visible sign that Portugal was an Arabic country for hundreds of years
