Unlike so many I see on my daily walk the phone stays in my pocket (unless I am taking a photo) and I keep my head held high even when I am in a middle of a ‘grief burst’. Fortunately though most walks now I am sufficiently distracted by my lovely walking companions, my audiobook or what is around me. The latter is part of the joy of walking, which is why I am always sad when I see so many walking whilst looking down at their phones. They are missing so much of the world around them plus they are a hazard to other pedestrians. Both Robert and I just stop walking and wait for them to look up and move around us, rather than us stepping out of their way! Amazingly it works.

The phone definitely struggles with trees!

PS Before I get any lectures on walking with headphones, I use bone conduction headphones so am never unaware of traffic around me or joggers coming up behind!

  1. The colours in the leaves are lovely and a blue sky always helps. Bone conduction headphones sounded a bit scary, so I looked them up and they seem less so now. I had imagined them all wrong. I am glad you’re not going to be taken by surprise and can still hear birdsong as you walk.

    1. I know there name is dreadful isn’t it, but promise you wearing them doesn’t feel strange and it is so much better being able to hear the world around me whilst also having a voice to stop my thoughts spiraling

  2. The use of phones is crazy. It particularly annoys me in dog walkers. There is no communication with the poor dog. Whereas I wander along chatting to Inka. I expect many people think I am the mad one!

    1. Even worse is seeing mothers out with babies in their pushchairs using their phones and taking no notice of the child whatsoever! No wonder children are growing up with no social skills. I used to talk to my babies all the time describing things we passed or singing nursery rhymes.

    2. It is just bizarre isn’t it – can’t see point of going out with a dog unless you spend time chatting to them too. I don’t think you are mad at all (well not when you are walking with Inka anyway!!!)

    1. Haha.. yes I agree it is a good idea to look down occasionally, just to make sure there is nothing nasty to step into! And to capture the odd interesting manhole cover 😁

  3. I’ve recently started walking with airpods with my S22, at the moment it is so windy that they keep falling out! I think I’m better walking with nothing

  4. Hold your head up high, Becky, but don’t forget the treats at ground level too: the pausing butterfly, the purposeful beetle, the swaying grass. And I’ve never got into audio when walking. Even at this time of year, when birdsong largely dies down, there’s so much to listen to. Though I accept that you’re trying to drown out other messages surging unbidden through your brain. Keep walking, and do what you like with your head!

    1. That’s very true, and yes before April I would have been hoffied at the thought of walking with an audiobook but at the moment it is the only thing that keeps me walking. Hopefully next year there will be more walks without than with them

  5. I’ve never developed that habit, and didn’t even know that bone conduction earphones were a possibility, but I imagine they can be good company if you’re walking alone, Becky. Those trees look beautiful. Hope you have a good Sunday.
