My bereavement counsellor is encouraging me to get outdoors for a short walk every day through the autumn and winter months. Her advice is good for all of us, but some days for me just getting dressed is a huge undertaking. However I said I would try, and so far so good. Initially I didn’t do much more than her suggested fifteen minutes but then it occurred to me to start monitoring my steps. I set a goal of achieving at least 6000 steps a day outside. After a couple of days I realised that goal was way too scary some days, and I might fail. So I downloaded another walking app. This one sets me the goal of a ten minute brisk walk every day. I like this one as getting out for ten minutes doesn’t sound scary, and I have found that after achieving ten minutes brisk walking most days I can convince myself to do another ten minutes, and then another ten.

Consequently there have since been days when I have walked briskly for nearly two hours and done more than 12,000 steps outdoors. There are also days when I curl up on the sofa or even go back to bed with tea, chocolate and a film. Thanks to the apps though even on these extra tough days I manage a short stroll. On good days I can take photographs too, not yet ready to take my camera out but I am increasingly reaching for the phone. So for the next month I thought I would share with you some of my walks, and encourage you to join me with your own #WalkingSquares.

A regular haunt for my walks is Sir Harold Hillier Gardens

I cannot promise any galleries this month, but it is a goal of mine to create at least one so do use the theme’s tag WalkingSquares to help me find you. Your photograph must be square and also don’t forget to include a pingback to my daily square posts in November. I am not expecting anyone to share a daily square though this time. I’ll be happy if you just join me weekly or simply pop in occasionally with your walks and comments. Your support will help me so much over the coming weeks.

  1. Over from Jo’s. Cheers to you for trying. Four things for you … one step at a time – one day at a time – don’t challenge time because it wins every time – but give time a chance. Peace and strength to you … and enjoy your walks. 🙂

  2. What a great idea Becky. Walking in nature will help, apparently even in the wet and cold, though I draw the line at muddy. I’ve not been doing much lately, the garden keeps me busy, but that’s drawing to a close now so maybe this will give me the incentive to go out and walk.

  3. What a great theme, Becky. It fits perfectly with your strides to recovery and with autumn (or spring) colours around we should see some wonderful views. I ha e to walk daily to keep Inka happy – now I just need to take a photo too! And find time to post!!

  4. Fabulous idea for Squares. It will encourage me to get out more as well hopefully.
Cee had a challenge a while ago. Walk 50 steps from your front door and take a photo. That was fun

  6. Fantastic to hear that you are getting outside every day Becky, even if sometimes it’s just for a short time. The app sounds like a great support system and hopefully all the fresh air and beauty will help with your healing. I’m looking forward to seeing your lovely photos every day.

  7. You know I’m jumping up and down, clapping my hands! Not so much for me but for you, because I think this is a great stride along the road to dealing with life. From a purely selfish point of view I’m looking forward to seeing your Autumn colour. Baby steps, one foot in front of the other- you know it’s a powerful feeling, being outdoors in nature. She can help you heal.

  8. You’re right in thinking that this one appeals to me, and perhaps I’ll get my own walking mojo back, still somewhat in abeyance post-Covid: though yes, I manage something daily. Photos though … let’s think. Keep up the walks, Becky. You know it makes sense! xx

    1. Yay, glad I was right and that it appeals. Really hope it helps you to get walking again too. You’ll have to download the NHS brisk walking app like me, and we can become digital companions!!
