Is your first thought that’s an odd place for an office, or does your heart sink at the sight of odd pieces furniture in the countryside. I have to admit I have got used to stumbling across the odd seat or two under a tree in the Algarvian countryside for use by a passing hunter or farmer. This though is a little bit unusual. Not a pretty sight I admit, but at least the hills are silent during the day and without lights at night.

Light and noise pollution is rife in most urban settings and increasingly also in country settings the UK and yet these pollutions seem to be far less talked about. They are however as harmful to nature and ourselves as abandoned rubbish and the less visible but ever growing plastic and chemical pollutants in the environment. I find it odd we don’t talk about light and noise as much.

That’s it for my Friday bugbear, let’s now focus on the fun of the Squares Challenge. If you have not yet joined us we are looking for square photographs that are;

  • Differing from the usual or not happening often (ie oddballs, the exceptions and follies)
  • Separated from its set or mate (eg odds and ends or maybe odd socks or shoes)
  • Not divisible exactly by two (ie odd numbers) or the number is unknown (ie 300 odd birds)
  • Or simply something that you find odd, afterall oddness like beauty is in the eye of the beholder

  1. An odd sight, but I don’t actually mind too much if they’re being used. It’s when they’re abandoned to decay in place that I dislike, especially given some of the materials in these kinds of things. I’m with you on light and noise pollution. We’ve very fortunate here in that neither of those is a real problem, being a mostly rural island. Here’s mine today: https://grahamsisland.com/2022/02/11/abstracts-skull/

  2. That’s definitely odd and not very safe either! I now understand one of the comments on my singing dog post! Talking of light pollution there aren’t many places left in the UK that can be considered ‘dark’ – West Penwith was officially recognised as an International Dark Sky Park (IDSP) in December 2021. We live just on the outskirts of the area but living in a hamlet there are no street lights.

  3. Good morning Becky B. That desk and chair does look rather odd sitting by the lake. I wouldn’t mind it as my office, though, would you? The countryside used to be notorious for having old cars, washing machines, and other appliances strew haphazardly in the front yard. Now, people do it on purpose, as we did, to decorate it. We purchased so much “OLD yard art” when we lived in CA, we could have furnished a house.

    Noise pollution is super irritating to me. Even my poor hard-of-hearing husband has the sound turned way down when he watches tv and lives on the subtitles unless I’m watching with him. I can’t stand noise pollution. I could rant for a while, but I’ll share my post for today instead. https://alwayswrite.blog/2022/02/11/square-odds-11-playing-with-a-new-app/
