Gargoyles (& grotesques) are definitely odd!

PS Sorry there hasn’t been a Square gallery yet, caught up with family and visitors. However hope to get one organised on Sunday or maybe Monday next week. In the meantime do visit the links in the comments, there are some fabulous oddities out there.

  1. I hate to object when everyone else agrees, but that doesn’t look like a gargoyle. Just a cute stone child with a hole in his head for water drainage. I could be wrong, but i think he’s part of the roofs drains — just a highly decorative drain. You can actually buy drains that look like that cast from some kind of stonelike material. i have a computer gargoyle on my office window. He is my favorite gargoyle of all, but he can’t drain the water from the roof.

    1. He’s definitely a gargoyle as he drains water, but you are right he does have a cute side.

The ones that just sit on roofs and don’t drain water are called grotesques. Such a strong name!

    1. I was only having that conversation with Graham. Quite intriguing what the people were thinking as they created them. Although has just occurred to me this morning, perhaps they were just really bad sculptors!!!
