On this day in 2017, I shared with you a rather lovely stroll in Birmingham. At the time I was recovering from my very first squares, I never envisaged I’d still be squaring four years later. You can enjoy the full walk here.

In case you hadn’t guessed October is Past Squares. A month to share memories, personal favourites, leftover squares and also have fun with themes you have always wanted to try.
It’s hard to beat a walk on a canal towpath. It’s so relaxing and there’s almost always things of interest around them or on the water. Here’s mine today: https://grahamsisland.com/2021/10/03/surfing-looks-easy/

The only thing that beats it is travelling even more slowly by being on a narrow boat!

I’ve never been on a canal boat in England, but I have done a bit in France and that’s exactly what I liked about it. The speed limit was 5 mph so I had to slow down and relax into the leisurely progress.

ah the French ones are large compared to the English ones, but the pace of life is the same – as you say perfect leisurely progress

Yay, here you are. Sorry I wasn’t around Sunday to welcome you, but great to catch up this morning

We volunteered all day at a nearby farms’ harvest festival, with spotty internet and 4G, so I get it, Becky. Had a blast and was still able to comment on posts…barely 🙂

You’ve posted a great shout-out for Birmingham canal district, Becky. Always a pleasing atmosphere along the towpaths – peace in the heart of the city.

Best bit of Birmingham me thinks!

Thanks for the indirect shout up, Becky! That was a lovely walk. Brum is a bit special for me because I met lovely Gilly there- she traveled from Exeter and me from the north east. I must give her a nudge because she’s stopped posting again.

I recall your meet up well – you had such fun

Brum has 35 miles of canals apparently. I must confess I have never been to look at them. I once got offered a job in Bourneville but had to turn it down because of the horrendous commute.
Sticking with old topics but with a new photo today:

Definitely worth a visit if ever fancy a city break. Some great hotels in the canal basin.

PS I wouldn’t want to be commuting in area though

No. It was when I was living in Shrewsbury and jobless. The commute either by train or car was about 1 hour 30 minutes without delays! It would have been a good job for me though.

That must have been a really tough decision

It was, and it lead to teaching, which was a really bad decision 😱

I have very little experience in Britain – but I’ve been to Birmingham. I loved the canals.
I have something kind of quite different: https://picturesimperfectblog.wordpress.com/2021/10/03/kind-square/

Not surprised, it doesn’t exactly top the cities to visit! Like Pittsburgh though in the US, it has many hidden delights

Actually according to a quiz show I caught sight of the other day, Birmingham is the second or third most popular city for tourists! I can’t say I have spent much time there other than passing through / changing trains / going to meetings. There is a rather lovely garden there though, Winterbourne House in Edgbaston, plus the Botanic Gardens.

Really?! Wow, that is surprising. Their tourist info must do a great job. We never got out to the gardens, next time maybe

You’ve caught the city so well, Becky. It has changed so much since my childhood, with a lot of cleaning, renovation and some amazing new buildings. And as you say, some great restaurants.

Lines can never be old – specially on an Island which has so many lines in it’s name!
