I probably should have shared these thoughts right at the start of the challenge, but learning from previous Square months there is always at least one fabulous person who joins us in the final week, so hopefully these thoughts will still be useful!
When I was preparing my Squares this month, MrB and I had a discussion about what is a tree. Wikipedia states that ‘In botany, a tree is a perennial plant with an elongated stem, or trunk, supporting branches and leaves in most species.’ Whereas Collins says ‘any large woody perennial plant with a distinct trunk giving rise to branches and leaves at some distance from the ground’. Which raises the question in my mind at least, when does a young tree become a tree?!
If you are one of those fabulous persons who have yet to square a tree you have until Saturday to create your square post with the tag #TreeSquare, and don’t forget to include a pingback to any of my daily square posts in July. The only absolute rule though for joining in with Squares is that your photograph must be square in shape!

Yes, what IS a tree? Thank you for making me stop and think about this.
My trees today are Monterey Pines: https://anthropologist.wordpress.com/2021/07/28/july-treesquare-challenge-16-ocean-beach-carmel/

Perhaps it’s all perspective, but I have thought about that question…what IS a tree? 🙂 I do get stuck on technicalities so I appreciate your research. Today’s contribution (no doubt a tree!):

The main thing is, the tree has a stem, a big one 😀

Well, it’s all from the human perspective. We classify certain things as trees, others as flowers, but other creatures surely classify them differently. And then we also note that some things we classify as trees, such as the ohia I posted recently, can also grow in other forms when we classify them as shrubs. Here’s mine today: https://grahamsisland.com/2021/07/28/name-that-tree/
