Apparently it was a couple of Popes who encouraged churches to have weather vanes in the shape of a cockerel, with the oldest surviving weathercock dating back to 820. This one on the steeple of St Mary’s Church in Longstock looks a bit more modern than that.
Nice one up out there! Here’s mine – https://myheart2heart.blog/2021/01/21/when-cupid-strikes/

Weather vanes always add a bit of personality to a building. Mine for today is another elk shot:https://wp.me/pbPd2C-86

Not really a fan of popes but I like seeing roosters on top of old barns.

Think you are probably right about not being a fan of popes!

Oh, a very nice cockerel – he looks very southern French to me. Though I may be influenced by my current literary-virtual travelling. It’s a nice image too, Becky – I like the minimalism

Well it is in a very posh Hampshire hamlet so wouldn’t surprise me if they looked to southern France!

That looks very like our weather cockerel, which is definitely new. They’re a pleasing sight that for some reason make you think all is right with the world. The little church at Myndtown below the Long Mynd has a fish weather vane.

I didn’t know about cockerels on church steeples – I’ll have to keep an eye out for them when we get back to going out and about again.

I didn’t realise either until I prepared the post, although I do always look out for them. Specially in Portugal where there are cockerels everywhere on roofs, but rarely as a weather vane.
