Even on a grey day there is something about just sitting still and watching the birds, whether they are in your garden, in the park or beside the sea. It is a great way to be uplifted for a minute or two, or even for a hour or three!

As regular squarers will know I am pretty relaxed about this quarterly challenge. You can join me posting squares daily or simply pop by as and when suits you and your blog. You can interpret the theme of up strictly, or let it take you somewhere random. Your photographs can be brand new or from the archives. It really is up to you! The only thing I do ask is that your photographs are square, and that means 4 equal sides. However even I occasionally add a rectangle to the mix, but only when it is in the minority!

Fantastic shots, Becky 👏 so clear & sharp 😃 Here’s mine: https://jezbraithwaite.blog/2021/01/03/sun-up/

thanks Jez – the Algarvian light helps enormously as even on a grey day it usually works

I love flying flocks of birds and I’m always amazed that they don’t bump into each other!

I know, they must have a sixth sense or something

Pictures of birds are amazing. How much more so to see them in real time.
Stepping away from my computer for just a sec and looking out the window to see the beauty of nature.
Still dark….maybe try again tomorrow. 😉

Am pretty taken with your flight of avocets (?) in that first photo.

avocets indeed – they are such a beautiful bird in flight. Called an orchestra, which makes so much sense

What a very wonderful collective noun. I’ve only ever spotted them in ‘here and there’ grazing mode, one or two among other waders, so to see them in such a huge flock is astonishing.

they seem to gather for a very short period – usually before they disappear we presume off to breeding grounds.

Love those flying flocks and love to watch them. I know there is scientific research going on how they fly like that in a group, it’s just fascinating.
And in other news: I’m glad I didn’t prepare many up squares because the other challengers will always put new thoughts in my head. I had an epiphany yesterday: https://picturesimperfectblog.wordpress.com/2021/01/03/whats-up-doc/

it is extraordinary how they move as a group. It was a really high tide, and so group after group was swirling in to the saltpans . . .and then quite often they took off again moments after settling only to settle again
