It is such a delight and an honour organising Winchester Heritage Open Days every year. Yes it does take over my life for a few weeks, if not months every year, but just look at what fun events I get to go to.

Friends of King Alfred Buses

If you can spare half hour now or later then I’ve love it if you could listen to the podcast it is quite extraordinary where some of these buses were found.

  1. The red one looks like my old school bus, though I think ours was green. Grabbing the pole to leap aboard, throwing the hockey bag under the stairs… oh happy days 😁

    1. I always felt I missed out on school buses – either lived within walking distance or too far away and so had to be driven as no bus route!

    1. You’ll have to come when there is a running day and the buses are taking passengers again – they still have those ticket machines and many of the conductors are original too!

  2. Charming buses. I’m a big fan antique vehicles! Good work on being an event organizer, that kind of thing can take over your life if not your house and family. More images from it please.

  3. That is really a tale to tell…imagine the details that they put in restoring the buses that is why it took so long to do it. Thanks for sharing Becky.

    1. Extraordinary isn’t it – still can’t get over the fact they had to repair another type of bus in order to bring back the one from America!

        1. Original please if possible. Has the King wielding a sword? Sounds like a great description from the blokes interview watching the buses chugging past the Aunts place

    1. So glad you have listened. I can’t decide which one I am more amazed by the one that made its way to America or back or the one in the field in Ireland!

      1. Where I grew up, there was a bus depot at the end of the street so I wandered among the buses all the time. My best thing was to get to the buses before the cleaners and find the coins on the floor! Most of the time it was a half pennies or pennies and a sixpence was a fortune.

        1. Oh no. The bus depot in Grafton is behind big fences and have a security patrol.
The buses used to be parked in the street when the depot was full so there was always about four or five parked so it was easy to rummage about. Never was chased off. They probably knew where I lived anyway

        1. 5 seriously injured, all under the age of 16years and lots of traumatised kids and I suspect drive too. It was his first day driving the bus professionally 😦
