The original photograph was portrait which meant when I cropped to square I had a choice – focus on the lamp or the cobbles. I couldn’t decide. Fortunately though thanks to the new ‘image compare’ option I can ask all of you to decide for me! Look there’s even a poll.

I voted cobbles and interestingly others did too.

We’re all asking questions today! Here’s mine:

I don’t see the slider in the Reader, but I do on the website. I prefer the landscape picture because you get to see it all and roam around admiring all the textures, but I’d vote for the more pavement one, although I like seeing both lamps. That’s the thing about cropping – sometimes you can lose something you don’t like, when it is a pleasure, and sometimes it is a sacrifice. I’d be interested to see a closer shot of the door and/or windows because the pattern on the wall fascinates me. Are the crops both of the same picture? When I looked in the Reader earlier on I was sure they were different, but on the site, they look to be the same.

Hmm interesting not working in reader yet, that’s a failing then on part of WP!
Yes same picture, interesting how crop changes them, and you are so right about cropping. Sometimes it works and sometimes it is a sacrifice.

It was a difficult choice, but good to keep thinking about the effects of squaring things off. A bee posterior from me today: https://tishfarrell.com/2020/07/17/does-my-bum-look-big-in-this/

I have voted that I can’t decide, but if I was forced…life depended on it sort of situation… I’d probably choose the lamps over the cobbles. 🙂

Yay, glad you struggled as much as me!

OR … you ca keep the one with the cobbles visible and only edit put the right strip, with the street light only half showing.

Oh definitely the lamps but then I’ve got a thing about lamps. My square today is on the March. https://somerville66.blogspot.com/2020/07/squareperspectives-photo-challenge-day.html

Lamps are a good thing to have a thing about!

I just tested – I can use the slider on my phone. It actually works better than on the big screen because of the size of the photos (the square barely fits on the computer screen but I don’t like to change the settings there because it makes the script so small – on the phone that doesn’t matter because it is easier to bring my nose closer). And I really don’t like the lamp cut in half. Maybe there is a third choice, going in closer, keeping the cobbles and completely losing the upper lamp? — I also went in for an old building with a variety of the view: https://picturesimperfectblog.wordpress.com/2020/07/17/one-square-is-not-enough/

We’ve had no internet connection since Thursday evening so I will post what I have prepared using a phone as a WiFi hotspot.

I am liking that you have found a workaround not that the internet issues have resurfaced 😦

Depends on what you view this on as to whether you see the fancy slider and poll. On my phone with the WP app it doesn’t. When I swap to seeing it as a website then it does. I like the cobbles except I don’t like the way the lamp is cut off in that format. And without the cobbles the image doesn’t seem balanced. I’m not being very helpful! Basically I don’t think this works as a square. Sorry 😢

Hee hee I think you are absoultely correct about this not working as a square, still it was a good exercise and I am discovering also a good test for this block editor and poll. Don’t think I will be using either again soon hearing all the problems on different devices

I think I prefer the one showing the two lamps because it’s mo dramatic: but I can’t get the entire image on screen at once in either case on my laptop. And I think this showcases just what WP is up to at the moment – clever gizmos that look impressive but aren’t helpful. I’d sooner have seen the photos side by side to compare them! Rant over, I’ve voted. I’m in London today, virtually speaking: https://margaret21.wordpress.com/2020/07/17/cheering-up-a-car-bonnet/

Good to rant, and good to get feedback on the WP block editor issues. Why or why do they launch something that doesn’t work on all devices – you are not alone in struggling with the viewing today. Wish they had a way to feedback stuff like this as I don’t really want to get into a long debate with one oft heir happiness engineers
