Statues and memorials can never tell the whole story, and how we perceive them will be affected by their location, why they’ve been commissioned, our understanding of history, our values, our culture, our preconceived notions and our past experiences.

For me the predominant perception when I look at this sculpture is the memory of why and when Mum and I saw The Wave. I do enjoy the beauty of it, and I also pause for thought of the horror of going over the top during World War One and the thousands who died, but mostly I remember the day itself. Remembrance is different for everyone, there is no single perspective.
What a cool art piece 😀 😀
Here is my entry for the day. Enjoy.

What a wonderful way to remember such a horrific time in history. The sculpture is absolutely beautiful and the photo from the angle at which you took it screams perspective! To me, it feels like a large flock of European Starlings dancing in the sky, only they are red flowers. 🙂

So glad you like it. I kept back for ages so I could get it without too many people. Mum was wondering what on earth I was up to, but when she saw the shot she understood!

This sculpture is breathtaking! You are right, each one deals with remembrance a different way, we shouldn’t judge. Have a great Sunday!

This reminds me of the poppies installation we saw at Carlisle castle in 2018. For me the amount of detail in every poppy is as impressive as the overall impact of the mass of poppies.

A great sight, Becky, It is incredible the power that the red poppies have to create emotions. And adding your own visit to it must make this shot very powerful.
It’s great as a square, too 🙂 Having the 2 viewers at the side brings it to life.
I’ve gone part historical today: https://travelwithintent.com/2020/07/12/colourful-perspective/
