It is time to announce the theme for July Squares. I really hope you are going to like it as I think it offers something for everyone; whether you want to tell a story, be artistic, challenge yourself technically or simply share a square that caught your eye. First though I want to share a little bit about where the idea came from.

Our perceptions are affected by our past experiences, education, values, culture, and preconceived notions. Just think of the post I wrote a few days ago on white privilege.
Current circumstances also affect our perceptions. Covid-19 has certainly changed my perspective. It has also bizarrely affected time. If you have been and/or still are in lock-down, have you noticed how some mornings seem to go on for ever and ever, and then suddenly it is the early evening? And is it really only 12 weeks since the official lockdown?

All this pondering has left one word in my mind – perspective. Guess not surprising as photography after all is all about perspective. Just google perspective photography and you will find hundreds if not thousands of posts on it. Perspective is also a word with multiple meanings, which makes it perfect for squares;
- Art – the method by which solid objects drawn or painted on a flat surface are given the appearance of depth and distance.
- Geometry – the way that objects appear smaller when they are further away and the way parallel lines appear to meet each other at a point in the distance.
- Point of View – a particular way of considering (looking at) something or the capacity to view things in their relative importance
- Vista – seeing something over distance or time

Today, through my multiple morning squares, I have attempted to explore the different meanings within one photo shoot. It has also been a great excuse to play with the block editor! I hope you have as much fun planning your July Squares.
For more inspiration and other perspectives I recommend visiting Jude’s 2020 Photo Challenge for a better understanding of depth of field and use of space, Cee’s CCYL post for some great geometry and Debbie for perspective this time last year.

Squares starts Wednesday 1st July. I will be sharing a Square Perspective daily and I’d love it if you did the same. You can though join us weekly or even just pop in occasionally with your squares. The frequency of your posts depends on you and your blog. The only absolute rule is that your main photograph must be square in shape.
If you have not participated before I recommend reading my Square Essentials page but before you go why not take a moment to enjoy 13 seconds of my morning perspective.
That was a nice 13-second perspective. Looking forward to the Squares!

I’m glad you’ve given us plenty of time to think about this one. I’ll have to consider my approach. I really liked how Anabel had a theme within the theme last time. Beautiful photos of the sailboat at sunset too.

Enjoy the planning, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with 😃

I read this on Twitter this morning which gave a very pared down version, so I didn’t see that effect where the picture changes as you run your finger across it. Very cool! Enjoy the challenge x

What a great idea for the theme, Becky. Our chosen perspective is one of the most important decisions we make when taking a photo – what do we see and what do we want to show? And it’s perfect for our current period of restricted roaming – a different perceptive on something we see every day can work wonders for our spirit.
And I’m glad my photos of a Plensa head gave some inspiration. I’m off to think about perspective…

Perspectives eh? With that literally being in the title of my blog, this should be fun! Thanks for the preview, Becky, it gives me a chance to plan my Sunday Stills themes for July to incorporate perspective. Love that split screen feature you included. Checking that out! Have a great week!

Hi Terri . . so glad you like the theme and that it is going to work so well 😀
And that split screen feature is great isn’t it – hoping it might sell a few people on block editor!

Some great perspectives out there! Love the split screen! Guess it’s time to explore the new editor… and no planning required for the July – has to be impromptu 🙃 awaiting the fun…

Do do explore it, it is well worth it once you get through the initiation!

So is that split screen available in the block editor? I rather like that effect. As for squares, this might be the month when i don’t participate daily, the first time ever. Not sure I am in the right head space for daily posting. But I shall link in my weekly posts if appropriate AND square! BTW a typo I believe “Art – the method by which sold* objects drawn…” *solid?

and well spotted I will go in there right now and amend

I think that this will be difficult for my music adds Becky. I’ll just bung on whatever fits my perspective at the time I guess. This will be hard for me as I won’t be able to plan in advance so I may be a bit haphazard over July but I shall endeavour to keep Mr bopping in the mornings lol

Haphazard and a bopping MrB sound good to me as any music offers a different perspective 😉

oohhhh…. this sounds cool but needs a bit more than just hacking “keyword” in my filing system …
BTW: re – the relativity of time. Having lived in Saudi Arabia I have experienced something similar. Saudi weekends are Thursdays and Fridays. (i.e. the first day of the week, the first day of the school week is Saturday – hence: TGIW = Thank God it’s Wednesday). To me this had the effect that days went by sloooowly (also because women are not allowed to work in Saudi except in very few professions which meant I dabbled in work from home) but the weeks flew past. Sat+Sun where proper weekdays/working days but somehow didn’t quite feel like it and bam!! Wednesday afternoon came along and the weekend had started.
