Snowy Owl at Hawk Conservancy Trust, Hampshire

Although maybe not this owl, as Snowy Owls are one of the heaviest owls. They have far more feathers than most owls. Partly because they have a wingspan of up to 5ft, but mostly because of the need for excellent insulation. Even their feet are covered in feathers. They are typically found in the northern circumpolar region but this one I photographed only last week at the Hawk Conservancy Trust. The Trust is now closed for the winter, but they re-open their doors on 8th February if you would like to meet some owls too.

  3. They used to live around here. I don’t know if they still do, but probably further north, in Canada towards colder areas. Magnificent close shot. It’s so hard to get that kind of face shot of a wild creature — even in a zoo.
