Apparently a line of salt across the path of a doorway or a windowsill will bar entry to unwanted spirits; there must be a lot of unwanted spirits here!

I’ve seen salt fields in various places, but not cliffs! We’ll be in the Algarve in February, so will look out for this.

Wow. That looks amazing. What does the air smell like? Like when you are at the coast?

ooh do you know I have never really noticed it . . . most of these salt mountains are on the coast so that could be why.

That is extraordinary, Becky. As to deterring evil forces, my mother always made us throw a pinch over our left shoulders, which might have been after we’d dropped a knife…

hee hee . . . . my grandmother was a great one for salt throwing, as well as avoiding ladders, not putting new shoes on the table, not opening umbrellas inside and always wearing your best knickers when out!
The latter btw wasn’t a superstition but a fear of being run over by a bus!!!

Haha, I recall all of those from childhood!

There must have been a book for grandmothers and mothers advising them to pass these on!

I still won’t let anyone put new shoes on the table!!! And the knickers, definitely!

Good grief, this could have been MY mother talking! She also forbid bringing lilac, cow parsley and peacock feathers into the house.

I’ve never heard of lilac not being allowed in the house, and did the cows parsley ban include ‘pea shooters’ made out of the dried stalks?!

Ha! That sounds like my mum too. And darn it, I still find myself complying to the strictures!
