Portuguese salt

Apparently a line of salt across the path of a doorway or a windowsill will bar entry to unwanted spirits; there must be a lot of unwanted spirits here!

  1. That is extraordinary, Becky. As to deterring evil forces, my mother always made us throw a pinch over our left shoulders, which might have been after we’d dropped a knife…

    1. hee hee . . . . my grandmother was a great one for salt throwing, as well as avoiding ladders, not putting new shoes on the table, not opening umbrellas inside and always wearing your best knickers when out!

      The latter btw wasn’t a superstition but a fear of being run over by a bus!!!

        1. I’ve never heard of lilac not being allowed in the house, and did the cows parsley ban include ‘pea shooters’ made out of the dried stalks?!
