The lovely Nancy is encouraging us to share hands, and in particular the stories they tell. So yesterday I decided to change today’s lines&squares post to this one.

The hands belong to a Winchester Cathedral scribe, whom I visited in the Undercroft during the Heritage Open Days festival. I am intrigued by the lines they are writing. Are they sharing their story, an extract from someone else’s story or are they random lines?
What beautiful lines, Becky! I still enjoy writing, and even did a calligraphy course earlier this year. It was great fun and I really need to find time to practice it.

I took a calligraphy course way back in the 80s. It is enough for writing greeting cards now but somebody practicing calligraphy today is like almost any other form of art not a means of communication anymore.

That’s so true . . . . even registrars use computers these days 😦

Handwriting is a lost art. Not sure the younger generation ever write anything down, they just tell their phones to create lists etc. I recall buying one of my children a calligraphy set for their birthday. Lovely lines, “a baby makes sunshine and moonbeams” (and also a lot of noise and mess 😂 ) I wonder what or who the words are for.

They are all going to get caught out when the electronics don’t work! And agree with you on the noise and mess too!!
The scribes create cards, wall hangings and more for the Cathedral and also do commissions so I am guessing it was for a card. I totally forgot to ask!!

Wish my handwriting looked that good. 🙂
I suspect the precision and care taken in forming the letters take a lot of time especially since they need to stick to the lines.

Speed comes with practice by the looks of it . . . I used to do it when I was a registrar of births, death and marriages . . the more you use ink the quicker you become. However I found I never got out of habit of spilling ink!!
