Now this is a cloister I’d happily sit in for a few hours. It can be found inside Convento da Conceição in Beja, Alentejo, the convent that was the home of Mariana Alcoforado, the Portuguese nun who became famous for her love letters to Marquis de Chantilly.
PS if you haven’t already do go and wish the Birthday Boy a Happy Birthday!
I love the ornate tiles, it has inspired me for my today blue post.

Hello everyone for some reason some of the Birthday Boy’s posts from the last few days have not been appearing, so here’s a couple you may have missed:

What a beautiful spot, Becky. The cloisters of churches often hold a few surprises, but I think this is the prettiest I’ve seen (virtually).
I really must add the Alentejo to my list for next year.

Beautiful tiles and story. I like the pattern the shadow is creating, playing over the tiles.

You can buy imitations of those tiles still, today. Not as beautiful as the originals, of course, but still lovely. If i had money to redo my kitchen, I would put those tiles up behind the sink and by the stove. Now THAT would be romantic!

There are still a couple of places in Portugal that make them the traditional way . . . like you we’d love to have the money to put them in our kitchen!

Ah romance. As I sit here in superheated America, my thoughts drift to snow and ice and cold.
That’s beautiful tile work.
