I was going to start with some physics today, but the more I read on Einstein’s theory of relativity the more I realised I didn’t understand! I thought I’d keep the title though; it is a great reminder that it is entirely up to you how you interpret this month’s theme for the square photography challenge. Following on from yesterday’s post my interpretation today is ‘time zone’, and some of you may be surprised to learn that there were once different zones in Britain. The zones were not significantly different but there was a variation, and you didn’t have to go far from Greenwich for the time to change.

One hundred and forty years ago (ish) Winchester in Hampshire was 5minutes and 16seconds behind London. I added the ish as whilst most towns with railways in Britain had in fact adopted ‘London time’ in the mid 19th century, Winchester may have been one of the few to resist the railways ‘London time’. The Guildhall where this recording of the time difference can be found was completed in the early 1870s suggesting that the council didn’t want to adopt London time, however it wasn’t long before they had to change. In 1880 standard time was legally adopted across the country. I wonder what the Council thought! And I am wondering even more what you are going to do with #timesquare this month. Here’s a reminder of the rules.

There is only one rule, your photograph must be square!

The December theme is TIME. I am sure everyone has found at least one #timesquare, but just in case you are struggling here are some #timesquare ideas;

  1. Timepieces – clocks, watches, sun dials and egg timers
  2. Sayings – Time & tide wait for no man (or woman!), A stitch in time saves nine, Early bird catches the worm, In the nick of time or More haste, less speed
  3. Synonyms – era, moment, season, infinity, interval, lifetime and age
  4. Out of the box – nighttime, downtime, pastime and mealtimes!

I will be posting daily and it would be fabulous if you could too, but don’t worry if you can’t as weekly posts, sporadic posts or even one post at the end of the month are all timely!

Monitoring Winchester

Don’t forget to keep your photograph square and to pingback to one of my time posts.

I have set it up so pingbacks must be approved, which means there can be a small time delay in your link appearing.

I aim to visit every pingback/link and at least once in December I will share a selection of my favourite times. If you want to be included in the square galleries please make sure you pingback to the posts rather than the home page as otherwise they can be lost.

  1. I’ve linked to your blog, but find it impossible to link to posts using the app, sorry. I’m determined to do my very best for the whole month. Thank you.

    1. The app just isn’t as user friendly is it. Such a nuisance, but no worries I’ll find your posts. 😁 Might be the occasional delay in commenting though.

  2. I did have a vague idea that time was different and that it was the railways which brought about the uniform time so that trains could run to a timetable. I have scheduled some photos, but might be slow in responding as the M-i-L passed away last Friday and we are sorting out the estate and funeral. Also full of cold still so not feeling the best at the moment.

  3. I seem to remember reading something about the different UK time zones, Becky.I live in different time zones now, thinking about it. The Bedroom is two minutes behind the Living Room! (Well, the clocks are, anyway! 😀 )
I’ve had a look through my photos and have quite a few that link to the theme of time, so I may be posting more than I originally thought!

    1. Yay, delighted you are going to be posting lots 😁 and we have the time travel in the house too thanks to a combination of stopped clocks and MrB always keeping at least one clock on GMT. Very confusing for guests!!

  4. Great beginning! I only learned (or re-learned?) recently that a unified time only came about with the arrival of trains (which makes sense, of course, but I just never thought of it. — At first, I was a bit stuck in literal interpretations of your time theme but I’m limbering up: https://picturesimperfect2.wordpress.com/2018/12/01/1280/ BTW: Now is not the time (sic!) to take pictures of them, but the next village here claims to be the community with the most sun dials in Germany. I’m sure I have one or two of them in my archive.

  5. Oy. I don’t have anything at all. But I’m thinking of some interpretation that can somehow include growing plants and birds. It’s winter here and I’m not really getting out much, but I’ll do my best 😀 Thanks for taking this one. So I’m going to give you a weirdly time sensitive picture for tomorrow. And it is definitely square.
