I had hoped today to share the first collection of your amazing entries, but the past 10 days have run away from me. What I have managed to do though is take a photograph specially for Square in September, and here it is.

Pretty in pink and yellow

Can you guess what it is?! Mum and I were very undecided about whether or not it works. It was one of many arrangements at this year’s Winchester Cathedral flower festival. The theme was Illumination of Flowers, inspired by the beautiful 12th century Winchester Bible.

The blurb which accompanied our tickets said we would be immersed ‘in a riot of colour as the Cathedral is transformed by striking and fragrant floral displays evoking the Bible’s exquisite illuminated initials and elaborate decorative schemes’. Pink & Yellow in Winchester CathedralHowever it wasn’t quite what we expected; difficult to explain why but maybe it was the lack of connection between arrangements, the fact so many of the colours didn’t seem to come out of a 12th century bible, or maybe it was because some arrangements left us very bemused! Many of my friends have said the same; we all agreed though the technical side of all the arrangements was amazing, the flowers were beautiful and there were some arrangements which took our breath away. But this one I struggled with. It is very pretty and very pink, but it did not sing ‘Winchester Bible’ to me! What do you think? Here’s the complete arrangement to help you decide.

Angel or out of Dr Who?
More Dr Who than a 12th century angel!

  1. Gorgeous flowers and I love your square shot, Becky. That made me think wedding flowers.
As for the angel, I have mixed feelings. It is more scary than protective, but then I guess I would be scared if an angel appeared in front of me.

  2. Oh, that’s interesting, isn’t it? I need to see some of the others. 🙂 🙂 At first glance at the close up I thought it was a cobwebby flower torch from Sao Bras. One track mind, some people!

  3. I’m pretty sure I’d run if I saw this behind me. Some floral art has caused me to scrunch my forehead in the past, but I’m gradually learning to grant artistic license. It’s good to be able to see the whole as well as a close up. The flowers are packed so tightly I wasn’t sure if they were carnations or roses at first, but I see it is both.

  4. I would have loved to have seen the exhibition. Did they have pages of the bible around for you to look at? Some of those illustrated bibles are fantastic. I would have expected much brighter colours, but I actually like the combination of the pink and yellow and unlike others on here, I actually like the wings. They give the impression of fragility. What I don’t like are the trailing ribbons.

    1. They had the whole Bible on show in one darkened room, but of course you can only see one page, and only one floral arrangement actually incorporated a page. It really was an odd exhibition, but don’t worry you’ll see the whole of it in due course. I took quite a few shots!!
